Rain Policy

It is important that all umpires understand and follow the IBUA rain policy.

1- Call/text the site contact the day of the game to confirm the game is still confirmed. The site contact’s information can be found on Arbiter (both the website and mobile app).

2- Once confirmed, notify your partner (for 2 man crew’s).

Any game cancelled after confirmation (usually about 1:00PM) and prior to game time, will result in 1/2 game fee.

Any game that is called due to rain or field conditions, after the 1st pitch, will result in a full game fee.

It is important to be flexible and work with the schools. Once the game begins, the field conditions and players safety will dictate whether the game continues or not. ALWAYS keep players safety the number one priority.

Things that can impact whether to continue with the game are:

Field Conditions & Safety-

Are the players slipping on the grass or is the infield turning into mud.

Are the pitchers slipping on the mound? Are they able to maintain their footing when delivering the pitch?

Are bats slipping out of the batters hands when swinging?

Is the area behind the plate stable enough for the umpire to maintain footing?

All decisions on whether to call the game should include your partner(s) for 2-3 man crews. Once decided among the crew, then include the coaches in the decision. Remember, the main priority is player and umpire safety.

The decision on field conditions to start the game is up to the Home Team Coach. Once the 1st pitch is thrown, the umpire now decides if the field is playable.
